Lend a hand to help keep public records open

During the opening remarks of the PAPME Annual Awards Banquet, Ernest Schreiber spoke about the importance of controlling the rights of open public records.

Schreiber is the treasurer of The Pennsylvania Freedom of Information Coalition (Pa FOIC), a nonprofit organization that works to give all Pennsylvania residents access to open records from federal, state, and local governments.

“The government exists to serve people, and it’s records are there to help [them],” Schreiber said. “They should be able to get that information quickly and simply.”

The FOIC helps to educate groups, monitor proposed state and federal laws, and provides information that encourages the discussion of open government documents in the Keystone State.

Schreiber placed pressman’s hats on each table in an effort to collect donations. People interested in the cause can visit the website, become a member, or simply use the free resources that are available.

“It’s fundamental for democracy,” Schreiber said.
